Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection

  1. WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this section, refer to Safety Warnings in section 100-00 General Information. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

    Refer to: Starter Motor (303-06B Starting System - 2.0L EcoBoost (184kW/250PS) - MI4, Removal and Installation).
    Refer to: Starter Motor (303-06D Starting System - 2.5L Duratec (125kW/170PS), Removal and Installation).
  1. Check the wear patterns on the starter drive gear and the flywheel or flexplate ring gear. If the wear pattern is normal, install the starter motor.

  1. If the starter drive gear and the flywheel or flexplate ring gear are not fully meshing and the gears are scored or damaged, install a new starter motor.

  1. If necessary, install a new flywheel or flexplate.
